Turmeric Wellness Shots

Okay – this one may sound like a far stretch for wellness but hear us out.

Turmeric isn’t just for Indian cuisine or staining your benches and clothes (I’m serious about the stains.  I’m typing this with yellow orange fingers at the moment – but believe you me, it is well worth it).

Turmeric can be used in juices and smoothies for the health benefits and a bit of color!

Can’t find fresh turmeric at your local Fruit and Veg Store? We have just the article for you called BEST ALTERNATIVES TO FRESH TURMERIC. In this article we run through the top turmeric extract options to get all the benefits of turmeric into your system (and then some).

This little recipe number that we have provided below pairs the turmeric with it’s second cousin, ginger!  Add a little bit of citrus (orange and lemon) and a pinch of pepper and we have an invigorating and energizing shot of goodness.

What benefits can you expect?

What is the point in drinking something that clearly looks like it should remain in the ground?  Well there are many well documented health benefits written about by the Medicine National Institutes of Health.  In their studies, they identified Turmeric has had positive effects on inflammatory conditions (including arthritis).  It has also being shown to relieve anxiety, stress and helps to stabilize your metabolism.

This coupled with the immune boosting properties of lemon and ginger makes this one powerful little shot of goodness.

How to make the Turmeric Ginger Shot

HOW you make the little shot is up to you and what you have lying around the kitchen.  My preference is to use a cold-press juicer to extract the maximum amount of nutrients from the ingredients. However I’m a bit of a juicing fiend, so in the end using a bar mix or blender will achieve the same result.

Equipment

  • Juicer (or blender)
  • Knife and chopping board

Ingredients

  • 1 small Orange variety of your choice
  • 2 small Lemons can choose to add more for tartness
  • 1/4 cup Sliced up Turmeric skin on optional
  • 1/4 cup Sliced up Ginger skin on optional
  • 1 pinch black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil (optional)

Instructions

  • Leaving skin on is probably ideal as it means less prep time and won't make a difference to the taste or texture of your juice. Simply feed the turmeric, ginger, lemon and orange through the machine for a tasty healthy wellness shot. Add olive oil and mix vigorously to emulsify. Add pepper at the end to taste.
  • Blending – Entirely your choice if you want the skin on. It may produce a more thicker texture as an end result. We suggest blending the turmeric and ginger first. Then add in juice from the lemons and oranges, olive oil and blitz once more for a smooth consistency. Add pepper at the end to taste.
  • If the mixture is too thick simply add some water to loosen the mixture until you achieve the desired consistency.
  • The shot should be consumed immediately to receive all the goodness and nutrients. Try it over ice on a warm summer's day.
